Historyof the
METALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT...

The starting point of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Faculty dates back to 1958, when the Chemical Engineering Department in The Technical School (Teknik Okul) of ITU was established. This Department had a four-year B.Sc. equivalent education, which was oriented more to the chemical technology discipline.

The Metallurgical Engineering branch of the faculty was started in the Mining Faculty in 1961, as a department.

In 1963, Chemistry Faculty was found giving a five-year engineering education, somewhat equivalent to M.Sc. In 1971, together with all other faculties, both Chemical and Mining Faculties accepted the B.Sc. and M.Sc. concepts as practiced in the Anglo-Saxon world involving 4 and 2 years respectively. Metallurgical Engineering Department was expanded into Metallurgy Faculty in 1978.

In 1982, the Chemical Faculty was split into Chemical Engineering and Chemistry Departments.

Chemical Engineering was merged to the Metallurgical Engineering Department transformed from Metallurgy Faculty as Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Faculty. The Chemistry Department was merged to form the Science and Letters Faculty together with Mathematics, Physics and Engineering Departments.

In the Faculty, Food Engineering Department was started in 1990 as the first department in the Marmara Region to meet the demand of the food sector of the area.

Due to the specialization in the department, the trend in the world and at some universities in Türkiye, the name of Metallurgical Engineering Department was changed to Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department in 1998.
